Dana White: UFC Champ Chris Weidman’s Next Opponent ‘Probably’ Vitor Belfort

At the UFC 175 post-fight press conference, focus had already shifted from Chris Weidman’s impressive title defense against Lyoto Machida to whom Weidman will fight next.

The undefeated middleweight champion was pelted with questions as he sat to the right of UFC President Dana White, including whether he would like to fight again before the end of 2014.

“Probably,” Weidman told reporters in Las Vegas after his unanimous decision win.

This could bode well for the UFC if it is able to book the “All-American” in a bout against Vitor Belfort. White confirmed that the promotion is eyeing “The Phenom” as Weidman’s next opponent, given that Belfort can straighten out his issues regarding regulatory drug testing with the Nevada Athletic Commission.

“I think what’s next and what everybody would like to see, what I’d like to see and what you’d like to see, is probably Vitor Belfort,” White said. “So, let’s see what happens with Vitor, if this guy can get his business handled.”

Weidman and Belfort were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 173 in Las Vegas, but Machida stepped in as a replacement after Belfort failed a random NAC drug test in February and withdrew from the bout.
