Erick Silva Taken to Hospital for Possible Concussion and Broken Jaw Following UFC Fight Night 40 Loss to Matt Brown

Erick SilvaThe UFC Fight Night 40 main event surpassed expectations on Saturday in Cincinnati with Matt Brown defeating Erick Silva by technical knockout in a fight that emerged as a Fight of the Year candidate.

Silva hurt Brown in the early going of the opening round with a kick to the body. He was close to finishing the Ohio native with strikes, but Brown recovered. Silva took Brown’s back and worked for submissions, but Brown defended the submission attempts and turned the tables. Once he got to his feet, Brown unleashed punches, kicks and elbows, nearly finishing Silva in the opening stanza.

The 29-year-old Brazilian hurt Brown again in the second frame with a kick to the body, but was unable to capitalize. Brown was relentless in his own attacks, landing 118 significant strikes.

Silva showed his toughness by taking Brown’s best shots, but was taken from the Octagon on a stretcher following the third-round technical-knockout loss. During the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White informed the media that Silva was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

“He went to the hospital to be checked out for a possible concussion and a possible broken jaw,” said the UFC president. White described Silva’s ability to absorb the amount of damage that he did as “incredible.”
