Having been rebooked, then pulled from this past weekend’s UFC 172 just three days before the event, Joe Ellenberger has a new assignment for his UFC debut.
Ellenberger (14-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will meet Frank Trevino (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 44 in June. UFC officials announced the new lightweight booking overnight.
UFC Fight Night 44 takes place June 28 at San Antonio’s AT&T Center. Broadcast plans haven’t been announced, but the card is likely to be seen on a combination of FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Ellenberger, the twin brother of UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger, now will be fighting for the first time in more than 18 months when he makes his UFC debut. He has won back-to-back fights after the first loss of his career, which came against now-UFC fighter Justin Salas for Victory Fighting Championship in 2011. His resume includes 12 stoppages in his 14 wins.
Ellenberger was scheduled to meet Yancy Medeiros at UFC 172. But an injury to Bobby Green sent Medeiros up the card to fight Jim Miller, and Vagner Rocha stepped in on five days’ notice to fight Ellenberger. But just three days before the fight, Rocha was pulled with an injury, and Ellenberger’s debut with the promotion was put on hold.
The 32-year-old Trevino will fight in his home state of Texas once again after making his UFC debut in March with a unanimous decision win over Renee Forte at UFC 171 in Dallas. The distance win pulled him to an even spread of four decisions, four knockouts and four submissions on his career resume, though all four decisions have come in his past five fights.
