Video: Bellator 117's Rick Hawn a two-division champion?

Rick Hawn feels equally comfortable at welterweight and lightweight, which is why tonight’s fight for a title could be the first of two he hopes to own.

In Bellator 117's Spike TV-televised headliner at Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Hawn (18-2 MMA, 10-2 BMMA) fights Douglas Lima (25-5 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) for a welterweight title recently vacated by Ben Askren.

Hawn, whose only career losses have come to welterweight Jay Hieron (via split decision) and then-light champion Michael Chandler, looks for his fifth straight win since a return to the 170-pound division. Admittedly, though, the 2004 Olympic judoka is probably better suited at lightweight.

“Earlier in my career, I thought I was only going to be a welterweight,” he told MMAjunkie Radio. “But then when I dropped to lightweight, I was like, ‘Well, I’m never going back to welterweight,’ and now I’m back up here again.

“I have the ability to be successful in both divisions, I think. Ultimately, lightweight is probably a better fit for me.”

To hear why, and to get his thoughts on whether he’d be interested in holding titles in both divisions, check out the above video.
