Video: Dana White blames hotel scale for Johny Hendricks' weigh-in problems

The UFC parks a scale at the fighter hotel for events, and a sign warns people not to mess with it.

UFC President Dana White thinks something went wrong, though, when Johny Hendricks weighed himself prior to official UFC 171 fighter weigh-ins, and it cost him another cut and some frayed nerves.

“It had to be a scale problem,” White told MMAjunkie immediately after the weigh-ins for Saturday’s event,” which saw the welterweight title challenger miss the 170-pound mark on his first attempt.

White clarified that it wasn’t the scale used by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees Saturday’s event at Dallas’ American Airlines Center, but the one Hendricks (15-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) used prior to arriving at the weigh-ins.

Hendricks weighed 171.5 pounds, which threatened to change the bout’s status. If he had been unable to make 170 pounds, his opponent, Robbie Lawler (22-9 MMA, 7-3 UFC), would have been eligible to win the vacant title, while Hendricks wouldn’t.

Thankfully for Hendricks, he was able to hit his mark on a second attempt nearly two hours later.

Although White said the situation wasn’t ideal, he said the promotion didn’t have a contingency plan and would have soldiered on with the the changed fight had Hendricks missed weight again.

Undoubtedly, though, White was happy that the promotion didn’t have to live with that scenario.
