The UFC on Fox 10 Main Event Has Big Implications in the Lightweight Division

B Henderson vs J Thomson Presser Faceoff-478x270The UFC on Fox 10 main event between former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson and former Strikeforce lightweight titleholder Josh Thomson has big implications in the 155-pound title picture. Whoever wins will likely determine who gets the next title shot.

Thomson was scheduled to face champion Anthony Pettis at UFC on Fox 9 on Dec. 14, but Pettis was forced out of the fight with a knee injury.

“If Thomson wins, he’s next in line,” said UFC president Dana White on Thursday.

Henderson was submitted by Pettis in the opening round in his last outing. It was the second time he’s lost to Pettis and will not be getting a title shot regardless of Saturday’s outcome. But if Henderson defeats Thomson, Gilbert Melendez would likely become the top contender.

“Obviously Benson Henderson just lost very decisively in his last fight with him. Should Benson Henderson win, we’ll see what’s up with Gil,” said White.

Melendez is currently negotiating a new contract with the promotion. He met with White early this week, and according to White, the meeting went well.

“No matter what happens on Saturday, it’s not bad for him,” said White about Melendez. “He’s one of the top three ranked guys in the world, so whatever happens he’s in a great spot.”
