SACRAMENTO – UFC President Dana White said Chad Mendes entered Saturday’s UFC on FOX 9 event fighting an illness, and after the first round, it kind of looked like it.
Still, Mendes (16-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) was never in any real danger against fellow featherweight Nik Lentz (24-6-2 MMA, 8-3-1 UFC), who suffered a unanimous-decision loss to the surging contender in a main-card bout at Sacramento’s Sleep Train Arena.
After four straight knockout victories, Mendes, a former title challenger, had to grind out a win over the durable Lentz. It got the job done, but it lacked the pizzaz of recent performances.
