Who needs the win more, Rua or Sonnen?

sonnen

When Fox Sports 1 jumps into the UFC world this Saturday at the TD Garden in Boston, fight fans will actually see one of the better televised UFC fight cards in recent history. There may be no titles on the line, but the main event of former light heavyweight champ Mauricio Rua vs. Chael Sonnen is indeed intriguing.

The 31 year old “Shogun” Rua (21-7) needs a convincing victory to stay relevant in the crowded division after dropping a decision to Alexander Gustaffson back in December, and with a 3-3 mark in his last 6 outings, he needs to prove he is still amongst the UFC elite.

Countering Rua will be the octagon’s resident trash talker, the 36 year old Chael Sonnen (27-13-1), who has dropped his last two and desperately needs a big win. Granted both losses were for belts- Anderson Silva’s middleweight strap and Jon Jones’ light heavyweight title- but regardless, both ended with early TKO losses. Sonnen always fights the best, but with three straight losses, his stock would continue its downward spiral. You can be the best trash talker in the world, but people stop listening if you keep losing....just ask Phil Baroni...

Two warriors; a must win for both. That really does make for a good cable televised card. Throw in a heavy hitter matchup featuring Alistair Overeem vs Travis Browne, bantamweights Urijah Faber vs. Yuri Alcantara, welterweights Matt Brown vs. Mike Pyle, middleweights Urijah Hall vs. John Howard, and lightweights Joe Lauzon vs. Michael Johnson onto the lineup and yes, that is a formidable card indeed…..

Enjoy!
