UFC on FOX 8 results/photos: Jorge Masvidal taps Michael Chiesa late in second

SEATTLE – Michael Chiesa was a heartbeat away from being saved by the bell when he reached his hand up and tapped out to Jorge Masvidal’s D’Arce choke at 4:59 of Round 2, thus ending “The Ultimate Fighter winner’s run among the ranks of the unbeatens.

The lightweight bout closed out the preliminary card of today’s UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on FOX.

Chiesa’s first professional loss was not without some bright spots. In the opening round he showed off improved striking, dropping Masvidal with a left hand before nearly finishing him with a guillotine choke.

In the second frame, however, it was Masvidal who threatened with submissions, eventually locking up the D’Arce in the waning moments of round two. Chiesa seemed as if he might be able to survive until the end of the round, but with one second left he tapped to the choke, ending the bout just before the horn sounded.

“It was a good fight, but I didn’t like my performance,” Masvidal said. “I was so mad when I realized I got clipped that I said if he doesn’t put me to sleep here, then I knew I’d get him. It didn’t hurt me, it just stunned me. He did a level change, and it was beautiful. He faked a shot and threw the straight left, and I didn’t see it. I just want top 10 guys from here on out.”

With the win, Masvidal (25-7 MMA, 2-0 UFC) remains unbeaten in the UFC since coming over from Strikeforce. Chiesa (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) suffers the first loss of his professional career.
