Tyson Steele-Steve Carl Named New WSOF 3 Co-Main Event

Welterweights Tyson Steele and Steve Carl will do battle in the WSOF 3 co-main event, World Series of Fighting officials announced Friday.

The June 14 event takes place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and is headlined by a welterweight rematch between UFC veterans Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman. WSOF 3 was initially supposed to feature a light heavyweight co-headliner pitting Tyrone Spong against Angel DeAnda, but that contest was recently postponed due to visa issues for Spong. The evening’s main draw airs live on NBC Sports Network and will also see former UFC talent Jacob Volkmann do battle with Strikeforce alum Lyle Beerbohm in preliminary card action.

Steele, 26, has lost just once as a professional, submitting to a Curtis Demarce triangle choke in 2010. Since that setback, the onetime Maximum Fighting Championship talent has won four straight, most recently making a successful WSOF debut over Gregor Gracie at the promotion’s premiere event in November.

Carl, meanwhile, owns 22 pro bouts to his credit and rides a five-fight winning streak heading into his showdown with Steele. Like his foe, the 28-year-old also made his WSOF foray back in November, when he submitted Ramico Blackmon with a first-round rear-naked choke. The grappler has forced 14 of his 19 conquered opponents to submit and has gone the distance just four times in more than seven years of competition.
