Curran tipped the scales at 144.7 pounds, while Shamhalaev checked in at an even 146 on his first try before matching Curran’s weight on his second attempt. Although most athletic commissions allow fighters a one-pound allowance, Bellator requires that competitors come in under the divisional limit to compete for a title.
Bellator 95 takes place at Revel in Atlantic City, N.J., and will also see Brett Cooper (185.2) lock horns with former WEC light heavyweight king Doug Marshall (185.4) in the evening’s co-main event. The show’s main card airs live on Spike TV and will also feature the Season 8 featherweight tournament finals pitting the hard-punching Mike Richman (145.1) against Dagestani talent Magomedrasul Khasbulaev (145.4). UFC veteran Karo Parisyan (171) will also make his Bellator debut in the evening’s first televised bout, as “The Heat” takes on former lightweight title challenger Rick Hawn (170.7) in a welterweight duel.
Prior to the Spike TV broadcast, the preliminary card streams live on Spike.com and will see former welterweight champion Lyman Good (170.8) square off with Renzo Gracie pupil Dante Rivera (170.9). UFC veteran Tom DeBlass (185.9) will also compete on the undercard, toeing the line against fellow Ring of Combat alum Carlos Brooks (188.8).
