In amusing UFC 159 video, Phil Davis says wrestling trumps jiu-jitsu

UFC 159 is still a month away, but the promotional push is underway, and main-card fighter Phil Davis has offered an amusing contribution.

After months of public bickering, Davis (10-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) looks to improve his light-heavyweight contender status when he meets rival Vinny Magalhaes (10-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at the April 27 pay-per-view event, which takes place at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Davis, a former NCAA Division I national champion wrestler, believe he’s got the edge over Magalhaes, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and world champion grappler.

“Vinny’s jiu-jitsu doesn’t concern me at all because he’s bound by the laws of jiu-jitsu,” Davis said. “I love jiu-jitsu. Jiu-jitsu is cool. It’s fun. But some of the rules in jiu-jitsu, I break. I do the exact wrong thing, and it works for me because I follow the rules of wrestling, and with wrestling, it’s a little bit stronger of an art form.”

During his successful UFC run, Davis has defeated the likes of Brian Stann, Alexander Gustafsson, Tim Boetsch and Antonio Rogerio Noguiera. He now plans to put Magalhaes in the same category, and he’s got some advice for him.

“They make these new tissues that moisturize your cheeks as you wipe away your tears,” Davis said. “Something to keep in mind.”
