Gracie Brothers Explain Jiu-Jitsu on UFC 101: Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Monday Night on Fuel TV

Ryron and Renor GracieFUEL TV premieres UFC 101: Gracie Jiu-Jitsu on Monday, March 18 (10:00 PM ET), featuring Rener and Ryron Gracie explaining the core positions, principles and techniques of the martial art that’s been made famous in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In the FUEL TV half-hour original, learn how Gracie Jiu-Jitsu enables a smaller person to defeat a larger more athletic opponent, and how submissions are used as a means of victory.

The two brothers open the show talking about their father Rorion, who created the UFC in 1993 to showcase the effectiveness of Jiu-Jitsu to the world, and how he choose their uncle Royce Gracie to fight in the early bouts. By applying the leverage-based techniques of Jiu-Jitsu, Royce proved that leverage and technique can overcome brute strength.

“In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we aim to win the fight in a series of phases, including closing the distance, executing the takedown, achieving the dominant position, and finishing the fight,” says Rener. Throughout the show, the two demonstrate these phases within the Octagon.

They discuss the importance of distance management: “Our grandfather once told us that in a fight, whoever manages the distance manages the damage that can be done,” says Rener. The brothers also highlight the primary positions including guard, side mount, full mount, back mount and how these lead to submission strategies including choke holds and joint locks.

Adding some more advice, Rener says: “This is what our Grandfather says about choke holds: There are no tough guys, everyone goes to sleep [in a choke hold].” The two name their three favorite Jiu-Jitsu submissions in UFC history, and discuss how Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is used in military, anti-bullying and women’s self-defense training. This is the third UFC 101 special produced by FUEL TV. The first two were UFC 101: The Fundamentals and UFC 101: The Moves.
