Alistair Overeem Licensed by Nevada Commission for UFC 156 Clash with ‘Bigfoot’ Silva

The Nevada Athletic Commission has granted Alistair Overeem a fight license, clearing the way for the heavyweight’s planned Feb. 2 meeting with Antonio Silva at UFC 156.

Overeem’s request for a license was unanimously approved by the commission during Tuesday’s monthly NAC hearing. UFC 156 takes place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and is headlined by a featherweight title confrontation between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar.

Overeem last appeared before the commission in April, when he received a nine-month suspension due to a failed March 27 drug test. That test, administered randomly by the NAC following a pre-fight press conference ahead of Overeem’s planned UFC 146 title bout with then-heavyweight king Junior dos Santos, revealed a 14-1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio, more than double Nevada’s legal limit of 6-to-1. “The Demolition Man” was pulled from the UFC 146 headliner and dos Santos instead defended his title against Frank Mir.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Overeem supplied five voluntary drug tests between June and November and had submitted to NAC-administered tests on Nov. 16 and Dec. 21. All results came back negative.

Overeem, 32, has not lost since 2007, posting a record of 11-0-1 in his last 12 fights. The former Strikeforce champion earned his UFC title shot by taking out former kingpin Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 just over one year ago. Known for his powerful striking, the Dutchman captured the K-1 World Grand Prix kickboxing title in December 2010, making him the first man to hold major titles in MMA and kickboxing simultaneously.
