UFC 153 Results: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Proves Strength of Jiu Jitsu; Submits Dave Herman

Rodrigo Nogueira and Randy Couture at UFC 102After having his arm broken by Frank Mir at UFC 140, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (34-7-1) returned to the Octagon against Dave Herman (21-5) at UFC 153 from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, earning a second-round submission finish.

Herman came out kicking early, before sweeping Nogueira, earning the takedown, but he quickly let the BJJ black belt back to his feet. Herman tested the right arm of Nogueira in the clinch against the cage, but the round was mostly fought with both fighters trading shots.

Nogueira tagged Herman with a big shot in the opening of the second round. Nogueira followed him down and  passed guard, moving to side control, and attempted an Americana. Herman fought off the initial onslaught, but his arm was quickly snatched by Nogueira. The position was lost, however, and the fighters returned to their feet.

After tagging Herman, Nogueira once again brought his opponent to the mat. After taking Herman’s arm, he was able to earn the tap at 4:31 of round two.

“I feel so happy. This man said jiu-jitsu doesn’t work, but jiu-jitsu does work,” Nogueira told Joe Rogan. “It’s Brazilian and an art.”
