Jones appeared in Binghamton City Court on Tuesday morning and reportedly had a request granted for more time to complete a required alcohol abuse and dependency evaluation. The mixed martial artist is now due back in court July 31.
Jones was arrested May 19 in Binghamton, N.Y., under suspicion of driving while intoxicated after running his Bentley into a utility pole. Jones reportedly told the court today that he is attending classes near his home in Ithaca, N.Y.
Jones pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor DWI charge on May 29 after negotiating a deal with the Broome County District Attorney's office. The plea dictated that Jones undergo the aforementioned evaluation and also called for Jones’ driving license to be suspended. An additional two-point infraction for an improper turn was dropped by the district attorney as part of the agreement. Today marked the second rescheduling of Jones’ sentencing date, which was originally slated for June 19.
Jones captured the UFC light heavyweight title from Mauricio Rua in March 2011 and has since defended it successfully against former champions Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans. The 24-year-old will next put his belt on the line against former Pride Fighting Championships and Strikeforce titlist Dan Henderson. The two collide on Sept. 1 at UFC 151 in Las Vegas.
