UFC Returns to Florida for Johnson-McCall Flyweight Rematch at UFC on FX 3

UFC on FX 3 now has a location, as promotion officials announced Thursday that the June 8 event will take place at the BankAtlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Headlined by a pivotal flyweight rematch between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall, the event is also expected to feature a pair of bantamweight confrontations pitting Jared Papazian against Dustin Pague and Scott Jorgensen against Eddie Wineland.

Nicknamed the Harley-Davidson Hometown Throwdown, the event marks the UFC’s first trip to the Sunshine State since UFC Fight Night 17 in 2009. Fan voting helped to decide the event’s location, and fans may also vote for one preliminary contest to make the main draw broadcast on FX.

Johnson and McCall first squared off in the semifinals of the UFC’s four-man flyweight tournament at UFC on FX 2 on March 3. The verdict was initially announced as a majority decision victory for “Mighty Mouse,” but it was later discovered that an error was made in tallying the judges’ scores. Though a majority draw was the true decision, the error was uncovered after the bout, thereby preventing the men from fighting a “sudden victory” round to decide a winner.

The winner of the rematch will square off against the other tournament finalist, Joseph Benavidez, to crown the UFC’s inaugural flyweight champion. Benavidez advanced in the draw by thrashing Yasuhiro Urushitani at UFC on FX 2, knocking out the former Shooto 123-pound champion at just 11 seconds of round two.

Johnson, 25, had a four-fight winning streak snapped last year when he was outpointed by Dominick Cruz in an attempt to capture the UFC bantamweight title. Known for his superior speed and wrestling ability, “Mighty Mouse” holds notable career victories over Norifumi Yamamoto, Miguel Torres and Damacio Page.

Meanwhile, McCall has put forth multiple stellar performances since dropping to flyweight last year after a 1-2 stint in the WEC at 135 pounds. “Uncle Creepy” made waves by posting successive victories over Jussier da Silva, Dustin Ortiz and Darrell Montague to capture the Tachi Palace Fights flyweight championship prior to joining the UFC’s new division.
