Melvin Guillard Faces Fabricio Camoes at UFC 148: Fan Reaction (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

By David King,

After coming close to a potential title shot, "Ultimate Fighter" season 2 contestant Melvin Guillard ran into some problems, getting derailed by Joe Lauzon at UFC 136 - Lauzon won in the first round via rear-naked choke.

Melvin was fortunate enough to get a golden opportunity to redeem himself. But he wasn't able to capitalize on the opportunity, getting tapped out by Jim Miller at "UFC on FX." Miller will now face Nate Diaz at "UFC on Fox 3," and the winner will get a shot at the promotion's lightweight title.

Guillard on the other hand will now face Fabricio Camoes at UFC 148, set for July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Camoes is a third degree BJJ black belt, with 7 of his 14 wins coming via submission.

It's no secret Melvin's biggest weakness is his poor submission defense, and UFC matchmakers certainly aren't making things easy for him by pairing him up with a seasoned submission specialist. Camoes is currently on a three fight winning streak (including a win over "Ultimate Fighter" season eight winner, Efrain Escudero), and Guillard will have his hands full when the two meet inside the Octagon.

I won't completely count him out against Camoes though, considering the fact he'll have the advantage in the striking department (his takedown defense isn't bad either).

When focused, Guillard is a pretty solid lightweight, but he needs to be a lot more consistent in the future. In his last fight against Miller, Guillard made a few strategic errors, repeatedly throwing flying knees and giving up his back when the fight hit the canvas.

At 29, Guillard still has time to fight his way up the UFC's lightweight rankings, but he'll need to pull out a victory against Camoes. Losing three straight fights is more than enough to get a fighter cut from the UFC. And Guillard isn't exactly one of UFC president Dana White's pals.
