Bellator is no longer trying to put together a rematch between its former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and Dream lightweight champion Shinya Aoki.
It’s now a done deal.
Alvarez and Aoki will meet at Bellator 66 on April 20 at the I-X Center in Cleveland.
The two have met before.
They were originally slated to meet in the finals of the Dream Lightweight Grand Prix, but Alvarez had to bow out due to injury. They instead met at the Dynamite!! 2008 New Year’s Eve event.
Aoki submitted Alvarez with a heel hook a minute-and-a-half into the first round.
Alvarez has been stumping for a rematch ever since, believing that he now has the experience and skills it takes against a fighter like Aoki.
“I’m just glad that they were able to get Aoki over here so that I can avenge my loss,” Alvarez said recently on MMAWeekly Radio Weekend Edition.
That remains to be seen, but at least now he’s got a date to try and make it a reality.
