UFC on Fox Main Event: Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos for the UFC Heavyweight Title

The UFC heavyweight title will be up for grabs as the first UFC on Fox main event with champion Cain Velasquez taking on top contender Junior Dos Santos.

UFC president Dana White made the announcement on a Friday media conference call.

“There’s no secret how excited we are about this new television deal with Fox,” White said. “Most of the people that know about the UFC and the rapid growth that we’ve had over the last 10 years, and I think one of the big reasons for that… we deliver.

“We are going with the most prestigious championship in all of sports. The heavyweight title. So on Nov. 12 at Anaheim Honda Center, UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will take on No. 1 contender Junior Dos Santos on the number one network in America, Fox.”

The fight between Velasquez and Dos Santos was originally rumored to be the main event for UFC 139 in San Jose, Calif., a week later, but now it will be the first ever main event for the UFC’s debut on Fox.

Actually, the fight between Velasquez and Dos Santos will be the only fight on the first ever Fox broadcast network televised card. White stated the heavyweight championship bout will be the only bout aired on the Fox debut.

Velasquez and Dos Santos have been on a collision course for several months, but with the champion on the shelf with injury the delay has now allowed for the fight to take place on Fox.

While UFC 139 is still set to go down in San Jose on Nov. 19, White stated that a main event has not been determined, but they are working on ideas right now.

Fox executive Eric Shanks also confirmed that if the one live fight between Velasquez and Dos Santos is a short fight, they will plan on either airing other fights from earlier in the night or some sort of ‘best of’ package with highlights from show’s card.

Tickets for the event go on sale Friday, Sept. 16 at the Honda Center box office and on Ticketmaster.
