Daniel Cormier dominated Jeff Monson at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum on Saturday night in Dallas.

On paper, it was a match-up of a two-time Olympic wrestler against a multi-time submission grappling champion; a veteran mixed martial artist with 53 bouts on his record against a fighter who has been competing in MMA for less than two years.

With all that ground fighting experience in the cage at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, the fans were treated to a stand-up fight.

Cormier decided not to draw on his wrestling experience and opted to keep the fight standing instead. He mixed up his strikes with kicks and punches, working combinations to the body and head of Monson. He even unleashed a few high kicks.

Monson adjusted in the second round and began to establish his jab, but Cormier landed the cleaner strikes, working combinations. As the round came to a close, Monson was visibly fatigued.

Cormier’s strikes found their mark more frequently in the final round, hurting the more experienced Monson with punches. But Jeff Monson is not easy to put away and the fight went the distance. The judges scored the fight unanimously for Cormier, 30-27 on all three scorecards.

With the win, Cormier advanced his undefeated record to 8-0 and looked impressive in the step up in competition.
