UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar Likely to Return in Late September or October

UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is on the mend and will likely be ready to get back in action in late September or October.

The update comes courtesy of Edgar’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz from Dominance MMA who spoke with MMAWeekly.com on Friday.

According to his manager, Edgar is currently resting and not training at all, allowing his back and ribs to heal and hopes to get back into training in early July.

Edgar originally injured his back about four weeks out from his scheduled fight against Gray Maynard at UFC 130. The champion tried to push through the injury, but eventually he just had to give in and drop out of the fight.

Edgar received treatments for his back in the form of shots to help bring down the inflammation, and will continue to rest to hopefully allow the injuries the necessary time to heal.

While no date has been set for Edgar’s return to action, he’s hopeful to face Gray Maynard on one of the upcoming cards this fall, possibly targeting either UFC 136 in Houston or UFC 137 in Las Vegas. If training goes well and his recovery is in place, Edgar could possibly return at UFC 135 in Denver as well.

Through the entire process, Edgar and his management state the UFC have been extremely helpful and the fan support has helped the champion push forward.

“The UFC has been great to us through all of this,” Abdel-Aziz stated. “The fan support has also been amazing, and Frankie really appreciates every single fan that has reached out to him since the injury happened.”

Edgar is resting at home in New Jersey and will look to get back into light training with his team at Ricardo Almeida’s and Renzo Gracie’s as well as working with head boxing coach Mark Henry in early July.
