To those that haven’t followed his career, which has taken place predominately outside the UFC, Jake Shields is an overwhelming underdog in Saturday night’s challenge of UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre. The masses aren’t giving the former Strikeforce middleweight champion much of a chance at UFC 129 in Toronto.
They give little regard to his 15-fight winning streak. It’s a streak that includes victims like Dan Henderson, Robbie Lawler, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit, and Martin Kampmann. It’s a streak that dates back to November 2005. It’s a streak that includes two weight classes.
That’s okay though, Shields has been down this road before. He’s been underrated then over-delivered time and time again. And he plans to do it once more, when he steps in the Octagon with the man considered amongst the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world… to shock the world again.
