Report: Mir-Schaub Bout Tabbed for March

Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir will reportedly meet once-beaten prospect Brendan Schaub at an as-yet-unannounced UFC event in March 2011.

Mir and Schaub have verbally agreed to the fight, which could take place at UFC Live 3 on March 3 or UFC 129 on March 19, according to an MMAJunkie.com report.

Mir’s last Octagon outing was against Mirko Filipovic at September’s UFC 119, a tepid affair which ended suddenly and dramatically when Mir knocked out “Cro Cop” in the third round. Prior to that fight, the 31-year-old Las Vegas native had himself been knocked out by Shane Carwin in their March UFC interim heavyweight title bout. While UFC President Dana White had publicly discussed the idea of Mir’s next fight being a rubber match with nemesis Brock Lensar, whom Mir submitted in February 2008 and was knocked out by in their July 2009 rematch. However, White reconsidered the matchup following a negative response from fans on Twitter.

Schaub, 27, was last seen at UFC 121 in October, when he took a dominant unanimous decision over former title contender Gabriel Gonzaga. The win marked the third straight for Schaub in 2010 and moved his record to 7-1, his only defeat coming at the hands of Roy Nelson in the final of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 10. A training partner of Carwin at Colorado’s Grudge Training Center, Schaub also spends time in New Mexico with renowned coach Greg Jackson’s camp.
