WEC 39: Fighter Bonuses and Official Gate

Featuring a main event for the WEC featherweight title between champion Mike Thomas Brown and hometown boy Leonard Garcia, WEC 39 did not disappoint. Attendance at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas came totaled 6,100 for a live gate of $297,990.

The “Fight of the Night” bonus went to Johny Hendricks and Alex Serdyukov, who had a three round all out war that Hendricks won via unanimous decision with all three judges scoring it 29-28.

“Knockout of the Night” went to Damacio Page for his brutal knockout of Marcus Galvao. Reports indicate that Galvao will be fine despite being removed from the cage on a stretcher.

In the main event, despite Garcia being well known for his punching power, it was Brown who landed the devastating punch as he landed a right to the head of Garcia early in the first round. What followed was a brutal ground and pound assault that saw Garcia get split wide open.

After realizing that Garcia wasn’t about to give up and the ref was not going to stop the fight Brown switched gears and choked Garcia out with an arm triangle choke thus earning him “Submission of the Night” honors.

All four fighters will receive an additional $7,500 for their performances. Salary information has not yet been made available.

The WEC will return next month on April 5 for WEC 40 in Chicago, Illinois at the UIC Pavilion.
